Discover Easley’s public “Library of Things”

EASLEY, SC — Have you ever thought, “I wish we had that here in Easley?”

Easley Citizen shared a Facebook meme a couple of weeks ago about a local library somewhere that had a section of useful items that people could borrow. Their “library of things” had helpful household items like toolkits and power washers.

We went to visit the Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Library here in Easley to ask if it was possible for us to build our own Library of Things.

To our surprise, our very own Pickens County Library System already has a Library of Things

What can you borrow from the Pickens County “Library of Things?”

Granted, the list of what you can borrow is very limited. You can borrow outdoor items and oversized games.

The list includes:

  • Bicycle Repair Kit
  • Cornhole
  • Disc Golf Kit
  • Dominoes Game
  • Easy Go Stack & Tumble Game
  • Giant Chess
  • Giant Connect 4 Game
  • Giant Jenga
  • Horseshoe Kits
  • Jumbo Checkers
  • Jump Rope

According to the staff at the Easley location, PCLS is looking to expand this section of the library.

They are considering items like cake stands and various toolkits.

A person on our Facebook page suggested items like folding tables and chairs for people that need one or a few for a party or family meal.

Other items that may be helpful and useful:

  • Small power tools like drills
  • Rock tumblers and craft equipment like laminators
  • Carpet cleaners
  • Meeting equipment like projectors
  • Dry-erase boards
  • Easels
  • Outdoor landscaping tools like leaf blowers
  • Gardening tools like rakes and shovels
  • Party decorations

Of course, some of these tools require maintenance and cleaning, but with some staff training and strategic collaboration with other agencies like public works, it may be possible to keep the maintenance costs to a minimum.

We look forward to seeing how our library system expands our “Library of Things.”
